I've heard "never dump it," but I've also never seen a batch of mine look like this. Is this what infected beer looks like?

It's almost impossible to know if it's infected, or furthermore - a dumper without tasting it.

This thread shows all sorts of strange (and disgusting) fermentations and some infections. Not all the infected batches were dumpers, even.

That looks like a normal krausen. Some beers ferment more vigorously than others. What kind of beer is it?

It is a belgian wit. Earlier, it had some oily white stuff on top that looked like some pics i've seen of lacto contamination.

I agree with therethere. My krausen looked like that after day 4. Like the tee shirt used to say,"if it smells good, eat it!".:D Besides that, ale yeast is top cropping.

some back story would be nice. what is it? how did you make it? how long has it been sitting there?

it looks like normal krausen and a little bit is dried on the sides.

I'm gonna give it a shot and bottle it. It is very definitely past day four and no longer fermenting, but this cap of stuff is still on there. When I saw the stuff I thought was lacto-something I ignored the whole thing thinking it was a dumper. I took the cover off of it today (several months later)

Looks normal to me and is probably tasty after sitting for several months!

I learned a few valuable lesson about hop utilization and aging a few years ago. I had just purchased a new wort chiller, and when I put it in the hot wort the intake hose popped off and dumped about a gallon of water in the wort before I stopped it. Several homebrews into the day, we decided to boil it for another hour to get rid of the excess water. Right after bottle conditioning, most bitter thing I have ever tasted. About 6 months later, flipping incredible. Hopefully this one works out as well.
