Default How long does Liquid Malt Extract last?

Hi All and thanks in advance.

I bought a 5 gallon ingredient kit for an amber brew but because i only own a 3 gallon carboy, I made 2.5 gallons (i just cut the recipe in half). Once the first batch is bottled, i am hoping to use the remaining ingredients to brew a second batch. After I used each ingratiate the first time, I put in in Tupperware and stashed it in the fridge. I assume the hops will be ok but what about the liquid malt extract? Is it still good to use after a month? I assume the yeast wouldn't last so i am planning on buying a new package.

Thanks so much.

The fresher, the better. But you should be fine. Hell, I have some wheat LME in the fridge that is a couple of years old. I only use it to make starters though. I wouldn't put it in my beer. Plus, you don't really know how old it was when you bought it. So, just keep in the fridge and make sure there isn't any mold or anything on it when you make your next brew.

A few months in the fridge if airtight - I've even used 6+ mo old stuff (no telling how long the LHBS had it on the shelf) and made great beer. But fresher is always better.

Welcome to the board!

Cheers!

I buy 33 lb packs. Usually last about 3 months. I just keep it in the basement. No issues. It is tough for anything to grow on anything with that concentration of sugar. If you ever do get anything growing on it, it is probably from condensation forming a small pool of water on top. Just scoop it out and use the rest.

Main problem with keeping LME for a while is that it will darken over time, resulting in a darker beer.

I keep my LME & yeast in the fridge. Always freshest that way.
