I know the answer is varied by type of beer...etc. However, I was just wondering how long does fermenting beer create an odor on average(pleasant or otherwise)?

untill it is done fermenting. Its the Co2 that is giving off the or at least delivering the aroma

I seem to smell mine for days 2-4 mostly, after that it's not very noticeable.

My carboys are in a closet and I don't get much, if any, smells from them. Usually when I open up the closet it smells like grain. The only ones that have really smelled was a beer with Wyeast 1010 (only once though) and apfelwein. They both stunk like rotten eggs for a couple of days.

Currently brewing a simple coopers kit beer on a Whitelabs Kolsch yeastcake for a mate... and it stinks. Very sulphuric ! Past experience says .. don't worry, be happy ! Or as we say here in Oz, she'll be apples mate ! It aint the smell will kill ya !
