Default Hop Marriage

Is there a rhime or rythem to determining which hops would go good together in a particular recipe?

Or is it basically trial and error?

It's both. Usually one hop plays the lead and the other will be second fiddle. I look at it as bittering, flavor and aroma. Finding ones that do there individual parts well and play great together is the hard part.
