hop conversion
how do I convert hop pellet weight to leaf weight?
1 oz hop pellets = how many oz hop leaves? |
I think it's 10% more for leaf hops.
|
Well, an ounce is an ounce. But utilization, weight, and AA% make the difference.
|
so if the recipe calls for an ounce of pellet then an ounce of leaf will work?

Supposedly you extract more from pellets due to them being crushed, but there is probably more variation in the listed AAs and boil method than the difference between leaf and pellet, that it is not worth the effort to account for it. I think the standard is use 10% more leaf than pellet for the same recipe. |
thank you

I was interested in this question, and in the book Designing Great Beers the author has a section where he analyzes this and determines that in general, leaf hops have 80% of the utilization of pellet hops. So that's more like 25% more leaf hops if you do it the other way around. I find this to be true by my own personal tastes, but yours may vary.
