I prodded the dark gunk when I pitched the starter and it had a slight metallic smell to it. Perhaps mold, but I have a feeling if it is the 3068 will out-compete it. Will be interesting to see.

I think the lesson here for me next time is to let the foam settle and clean off the lid before storage.

Just a quick follow-up...
My month old top-cropped 3068 is performing amazingly well. It was active within a couple hour after pitching, which I have never seen before, even from fresh smack packs. What I'm learning (so far ) is that pure top-cropped yeast keeps well and performs very well.
