Default gravity read paranoia

I have had some trouble keeping the temp high enough for fermentation, I think it should be done by now, but I am paranoid about opening the lid on my fermenter. I don't have a baster long enough or the wine theif to grab a sample. Is it ok to pull out the lid, get a sample, and cover again? If the final gravity is not there yet I don't want spoil. Just looking for some reassurance or hints. Thanks

It is fine to open the fermenter and take a reading. There is a blanket of CO2 to protect your beer. Just make sure nothing falls into the bucket and that anything you put in the beer (like a baster or hydrometer) is properly sanitized.

just sanitize the hydrometer (and your fingers) and put it in the bucket.
unless the krausen is too thick, this is a fine method to take gravity measurements.

i only use a wine thief for carboy samples.
