Default First time racking to secondary went off without more than 1 hitch...

Well yesterday I racked my bear tooth stout to my secondary better bottle for the first time. It went perfectly, not a single problem. This also marks the first time I used starsan.

All was well, got the stopper in the carboy, 3 piece airlock inplace, about ready to take a hydrometer reading (and the all important first taste) from the sample I have sitting. All of a sudden, I bump into the table with the sample on it, and my large measuring cup with the sample sitting in it comes crashing down onto the floor and shatters all over the place!

Looks like I'm waiting another two weeks for another sample

Two words

Wine

This thing makes hydro readings and taste samples so easy... just hit the bugger with a little sanitizer and dip it in...

I just use a sanitized turkey baster- stick it in the carboy opening and grab a sample. (I don't think I could wait two weeks!)

I'm glad to hear that your carboy didn't get bumped or broken- just a mess with the broken measuring cup and beer!

Thanks for the suggestion. Really not a bad idea at all. I think I will run out today and get one or the other. I think in the end, I was saddest to see 2 cups of beautiful stout on my garage floor. Had there not been glass in the mix, I might have been on my hands and knees getting to know the concrete floor.
