Does the thief have to touch the bottom of the carboy to allow the beer to enter the thief? I just bought a glass thief and broke it before I could even use it barely tapped it on the counter and it snapped in half. Pretty bad luck on my part

nope, I usually only get 3 inches into fermenting wort, give it a second to reach that level, cap with my finger and into my test tube.
bummer about breaking it. I like mine.

yeah, what a way to waste 17 bucks
is 3 inches enough to get a hydro reading? or do you have to do it a couple times?

I love my Fermtech wine thief and it does not have to touch the bottom. If you can't get enough just by putting it in the bucket or carboy, just gently jiggle it up and down and it will fill all the way up.
After it has enough liquid to fill a testing tube, just pull it out and the dangly thing on the bottom stops the liquid from coming out until you press it against something.

You might be able to mod a turkey baster with some hose crammed over the end. No reason it wouldn't work.
And yes, it takes 3 to 4 hits on the wine thief to fill a hyrdrometer sample. The refractometer only needs one hit. Less actually, the rest is to taste. When it tastes good, it is ready.

I got a plastic wine thief so I couldn't break it, then today I tried to see if it could work putting the hydrometer right in there...broke the hydrometer. At least I had an ingredients order to place, so I tossed a new one on.

I can pull a sample of a 5 gallon batch out of a 6 gallon better bottle easily with mine. I like it a lot better than the thief (although I have one)

right so you take as much as you can into the baster, empty it into your test vessel, then repeat the process until you have the volume you need. It takes at most 2-3 repetitions and isn't a big deal as long as you don't touch the baster to anything else or cause any bubbles when taking the sample. the only downside is not being able to return the sample to the fermenter, but at least you have more for tasting.
