I don't think it's harder just more equipment and more time involved. Other than that I don't think AG is all that more difficult. After I did the first couple of AG brews I was thinking that I have forgotten something because it should have been more complicated. In reality it wasn't. Just a different process. Personally I like the process and being able to be in more control of the final product.

You will need a mashtun to be able to covert your grain to extract, this is the main difference. Now you can get as simple or as complicated as you want with with that. It's whatever your preference and budget is.

i'd say read through the stickies on AG brewing on HBT. like beer loaf said, it's not harder, just different. it takes more time, more equipment, and a basic understanding of what happens in a mash. you can go as basic as BIAB in the kitchen, or ball$ out with a large mash tun and all the fixins that go along with a multi tier rig. however you go, AG will give you a lot more control of the final beer, and IMO, PM and AG brewing makes a consistently better brew. i still brew extract sometimes, and make great beer doing so, but i really like the control PM and especially AG gives me as a brewer.

Check out BIAB (brew in a bag). No equipment investment required, but for a 5 gallon paint strainer bag at Home Depot (five bucks for two). Add the grains to your bag, heat your strike water to approrpiate temp to account for grain heat loss, add grains to water and stir like a crazy person until temperature is even and correct for your mash and leave for an hour. While mashing, heat sparge water (if you want to sparge- many BIAB brewers don't sparge at all) in another pot, transfer to sparge pot when done mashing, let sit for 10 minutes, stir, and remove and drain grain bag as much as possible. Combine the two liquids and boil as you would extract.

Simple as that, no investment required (unless you need a second pot, but that's literally it), and as you're doing dunk batch sparging, there's no need to worry about a stuck sparge so you can crush very fine to get your efficiency up (I'm around 75%-80% with a single batch sparge and .025 crush).

I have done a couple BIAB... Its all about hitting certain temps and holding em etc. Not hard, just more fun. It takes a lot longer, and as mentioned above you'll need more equipt but BIAB is very straight forward....
