I didn't want to take the top off and get more air in with the wort but it was going crazy. I guess I put too much water in the carboy. I cleaned the air lock and put it back on it started bubbling even more. More streams of foam squirting everwhere. Argghhhh! Its slowed down a bit now.

Did I screw it up with more air? If not I've got a tube top thing I can use as an air lock instead. Thanks for your thoughts on batch two. :mug:

Use the blowoff tube. This is pretty common actually. What size carboy are you using? If it is a five gallon batch you want a 6.5 gal carboy for primary fermentation.

And don't worry. You didnt ruin anything. :)

Kind of hard to get air in to a vessel that is pumping out CO2.
Thanks for not yelling Exploding! when clearly there are no glas shards.

Thanks! Put the other top on with the hose into a gallon milk container 1/3 filled with water. That makes sense that while some air gets into the wort it is pushed right back out by the co2 once the new airlock it on. Got it.

And yes it's a five gallon carboy filled to the shoulder. I guess I got the wrong one as these begginer kits all seem made for 5 gallons.

If you're using a 5 gallon carboy for your primary fermenter you're going to need a blow off for pretty much every batch. (You're also only going to have about 4.5 gallons from every batch.)

You may want to pick up a 6 or a 6.5 gallon for your primary, and leave the 5 gallon for secondary fermentation and cider/mead/wine.

This is the time when some smart ass says something like "Pictures, or else it never happened!"

So, how about some pics, because no one believes you!:D

It said no pictures until 25 posts and the wall is now cleaned so not as exciting anymore. Thanks again for help.
