Default Can I use my auto siphon as a "wine thief"?

I want to take a hydro sample but don't have a super long turkey baster and don't want to turn the fermenter on it's side (spilling, contact with the krausen on the side) to use the short one I have.

Can I use my auto siphon? Just basically draw fluid into it but not push down and start the siphon?

Anyone done this?

Sweet. Just saved $10 on buying a glorified turkey baster at the LHBS

why not buy a turkey baster at a dollar store or something? it's much easier to sanitize than an entire auto siphon

Because it isn't long enough sir. Also, sanitizing the auto siphon will be pretty easy.
