Default Beer Types?

I am new to home brewing and not a real experienced beer drinker. I haven't had to many beers outside of the normal bar beers like Bud Lite and Miller Lite. Can someone give me a breakdown of the different types of beers or point me in the direction of a good web page that has a breakdown? I am seeing all kinds of different names for beers and types of beers that I have never heard. Like ale, lager, stout, imperial, etc.

Don't mind if I do!

Palmer's 'How to Brew' has various recipes which show the differences. So does Homebrewing for Dummies (which is actually a pretty good book).
