I will try the hydrometer reading. How long is too long to wait to pitch another packet of yeast, if the first one didn't work? Thanks

When you're sure it's stalled out,& can't be warmed & swirled into starting again.

OK I guess I was worried unnecessarily, when I opened the beer and took a big whiff, I got a nose full of alcohol vapor, so the yeast survived! I also took a hydrometer reading (1.024) but I must admit I don't really know what that means yet. I just moved it to a carboy after 10 days and will leave it there another week or so. Also after transferring it to the carboy the airlock started bubbling again, so maybe it was the seal on the plastic bucket not being air tight.

So you guys are right the lack of airlock bubbling wasn't a good indicator of anything. Thanks for the info and help.

I like to open the top of the fermenter bucket, or if it's in glass, just stare at it and look for individual bubbles through a magnifying glass with a bright light strapped to my head.

If you see some bubbles in the airlock, even one a day, it's working.

i found that 2 new buckets i received leak around the lid. none of my brews actually caused the airlocks (2 different ones) to bubble at all. but once i pulled the airlock out, the smell hit me and i could see the foam. I'm use to the Coopers FV with the collar and top. easy to see in if your a worry wart.
