Altering Brown Ale Recipe Help
Hey everyone -- new brewer here -- I just bought my equipment yesterday, as well as a kit recipe for brown ale. Upon getting it home and doing some calculations, it looks like the brown ale is going to turn out lighter than I had been anticipating. It's got:
5 lbs ultralight malt extract (OG about 1.035)
8 oz crystal 60 (steeped)
4 oz chocolate malt (steeped)
1 oz Williamette hops (bittering)
1 oz Williamette hops (finishing)
Based on my calculations, this should give me an OG of around 1.038. Assuming a FG of 1/5th that (which is generous?), that would lead to just under 4% ABV.
However, I'd rather aim for about 4.7% ABV. So I was thinking about modifying the recipe by adding 1 lb of ultralight malt extract (which would give me an additional 0.07 OG), and stealing 0.2oz some of the finishing hops to use as bittering hops to offset the additional sweetness.
Any thoughts as to whether this would work as desired?
