Default Allergic to beer!

Well, not me (thank god).

A good friend of mine gave me a call and he sounded like someone died. I was expecting to hear some horrible news when he said that he just found out he's allergic to malt. The guy was devastated. He is a craft beer lover and was looking to get into brewing in the new year until he got the news.

So, he wanted to know what beers have little malt or if there are any alternatives. I wasn't sure about it seeing as how malt pretty much makes it beer.

Any suggestions as to what he can drink? At the very least a good beer low in malt?

Ouch!

Wonder how a benedryl + carb cap would work for each bottle.

Is it siliac's (sp) disease? There are more people brewing sorghum beers out there for that reason.

How old was he? Hopefully he lived a full and fruitful life. Was he married? Any kids?

That's so sad. Maybe he can try ciders, or sake, or *sob!*...... Sorry. I'm all verklempt. Please talk amongst yourselves.... The topic: Should he take up interior design to fill the void?

He needs to nail down exactly what he is allergic to, beer is complex. I've heard of people being allergic to maltose, hops & gluten. With most allergies, going to a low-[whatever] isn't going to help. If the problem is maltose, then ciders & meads are his main alternatives.

What about rice beer? I have heard of it before and even tried it. It was not horrible or anything. Or would rice fall into that maltose catagory?
