Default airlock and fermentation

My airlock filled up with beer, and was told it's okay I took the airlock out cleaned it and put it back, again it filled back up with beer, and the lid of the primary blew off what do I do do I check the temperature of the fermentation

Clean the lid and instead of using the airlock take a piece if tubing and insert that into the hole in the lid. And stick the other end submerged in a gallon jug or similar sized container with enough water/sanitizer to cover the end of the hose this is a blow off tube. Your essentially just making a larger airlock that is less prone to clogging and blowing the lid off.
