Default 5 gal plastic water bottles as carboys

Has anyone ever used those big 5 gal plastic water bottles you can get at the grocery store as a carboy? If so, how'd it do? If it worked, seems like that would be a pretty cheap, sturdy alternative for primary and secondary, etc.

Oh, a time or two.

This is the first thread that shows up when you put "water bottle" into that fancy search function up there.

It depends on the type of plastic. See this thread.

The only problem with these bottles is that if you are making a five gallon batch in a 5 gal bottle, you are going to have little to no headspace.

Out of all the possible threads I could post to answer that question, I have made that particular thread my default answer to the question.
