Default 3 piece airlock

OK, stupid question. I have always used a triple ripple airlock for my primary and just got a new bucket and 3 piece airlock setup. Am I supposed to put water in the 3 piece like I did the triple ripple? If so, how high do you fill it up?

Thanks

Fill it a little less than half.

There should be a little line etched at around the half-way mark. Fill it to that.

Like they said, but I'd use cheapest Vodka or Starsan instead of water. Just a bit more protection. Don't use bleach water or anything that you would mind getting sucked into your beer.

nope. Even if there is some suck back, the amount you use in the airlock is minuscule compared to the volume of beer in the fermenter.

keep in mind that i am fermenting my first mead right now, i also use cheap polish vodka (3 euros a liter!) in my air locks and i doubt the little bit that splashed in (less then 1/5 of an oz) in to a 6 gallon carboy with 5.5 gallons of mead will affect the tast at all.

Great thanks!

Oh, by the way I'm building my tiered system this weekend. I'll put pics up ASAP.
