I am relatively new to home brewing, I was wondering what the advantage is to making a yeast starter.

Builds your count so you have more yeast to do the job and keeps you from stressing them out. You could achieve the same by buying several packs of yeast, but a yeast starter allows you to save money by buying one pack and a cup of DME and building it up yourself.
