Hops have preservative qualities, but I've never used them in starters. It's not like it's sitting around for 2 weeks before using.

i think it's just if you use the same dme and hops you would with your beer...keep the taste the same? isn't necessary at all.

Acts as a preservative. I don't add hops, because I like doing starters in a clear bottle so I can see the yeast layer, and I don't want to have to worry about skunking.

I've seen both opinions, with no definitive references. They do have antibacterial properties, that is known. Are they necessary? Again, I don't know. I use a couple pellets. Just paranoid, I guess. They don't interfere with being able to see what's going on.

can hops skunk a starter. i thought the sunlight and skunking refered to the sugars and sunlight

Skunking results from the sunlight affect on some of the hop compounds.

Wine and cider do not get affected by skunking because they don't contain hops.

I've read that it helps the yeast get more accustomed to the environment they're being dumped into
