Default Whitey's Gone Fish'in Pale Ale

I bought two batches worth of ingredients from the recipe in The Joy of Homebrewing called Whitey's Gone Fishing Pale Ale.

For batch one, just going to do it by the book. Batch two I was thinking of using a chili pepper in it. Is that advisable for an ale? How many peppers should I use for those that have done it? Would I pitch the peppers in a secondary?

When I've been involved with pepper brew it was in small tablespoon at a time at 45 and 15 during the boil process. Very successful. Also tried cajan crab boil seasoning the same way too. Was an aceptional beer.

Default Badaboom, any results yet on Whitey's?

I believe that was the simplest recipe in JoHB. Which is why I'd like to use it as a base. Any idea what ABV is? Based on ingredients I'm thinking 3.5-4.5?
Thanks, Mark
