I need help deciding if I should make the porter or stout.

Make a half size batch of each. That way you will be able to sample and decide which one was the wrong choice.

I just finished my first batch of AHS's Vanilla Porter and will certainly be making it again. So far it is my favorite home brew to date. It was delicious even prior to adding the vanilla extract at bottling, the vanilla just puts it over the top
