Thanks guys I understand it now. The only left to do is buy some grains and go try it.

One of these.

(unscrew or break off the center post)

Using the strainer lifts the grainbag above the level of the spigot and prevent stuck sparges.

A piece of hose with a small slit can be wedged to drain the cooler.

Hi,
I know everybody will shake their head at this, but could this same set-up as Revvy's above be used for all grain (with a larger cooler of course)? This seems like the original spigot. What exactly is the reason not to use the original spigot unmodified? (cleanliness, strength, tradition?)

Thanks. I know it's not hard to change out, but I haven't been able to find out why it's always done...

Thanks

It's not always done, just usually. Any method that lets you drain the mash tun is fine. Some brewers just merely shove the tubing through the cooler drain and keep the hosee above the liquid level to mash and lower the tubing to sparge.

I have also seen photos of people using coolers w/out a hole. A ridgid tube goes up over the side of the cooler and the syphon the sparge out.

Oh, w/ a full size cooler unmodified, you might be holding that button for 10 minutes while the mash drains...not fun, but it would work if thats what you want to do.

As long as the tun drains...you have wort.

Note, not shaking head at all. Any method that works is fine by me!
