SWMBO said "I want Porter!!!"
|
|
So I brewed one.
Now my foolproof Porter Recipe is an extract recipe, which some people think is evil... but even though it costs a whole $2.00 more than a whole grain version, It actually tastes better to SWMBO.
let's do the math.
SWMBO + Briess Extract = happy household = SOLD!
I get to brew. Yaaayy!!!
anyway.
here is the formerly secret recipe for Lampost Porter.
5 Gallon Batch
8 oz. Black Patent
4 oz. Chocolate malt
8 oz. Vienna
steep above at 160 for 30 minutes.
in boil kettle add
6 oz. Piloncillo
6 lbs. Light malt extract
.5 oz Galena (12 % )( 60 min )
1 oz. Fuggles ( 10 min )
S-04 yeast.
Starting gravity 1.050
should finish out around 4.8 % ABV.
It is tasty.

you can't beat a happy household and a SWMBO who wants a porter! That recipe looks awesome as well!

Nice. Like the use of piloncillo.
On an related(ish) note:
My SWMBO said, "Do granny apples taste good in beer?"
"Why?"
"I want granny apple beer."
"I make cider."
"No, granny apple beer."
"Wanna wait a few years? I could probably do that if I could experiment with lambic brewing styles. Besides, you don't even like beer."
"Yeah, but I like granny apples."
"Sigh."
A request for a nice porter would be a welcome change!

I am a firm believer in the KISS principle of brewing.
some things I brew are extract, some are all-grain.
some are a combination of both.
Results are what matter.
SWMBO gets the beer she likes on tap and she can get a nice light buzz when she raids playin' World Of Warcraft -- why should I argue?

thanks.
some people say they don't notice it in the flavor.
It's subtle.
It's also fun to use in other recipes.
my Dubbel for example.

Go with a neutral wheat beer mixed with a granny smith apple cider.
Technically a Shandy, but who cares.
happy home = less brew hassle.

How about this approach:
I brew what I want. She barely ever drinks a drop, anyway. Overall happiness...likely greater.

My SWMBO has needs. As do I. Luckily, we can compromise.
I have a restaurant kegerator ( True TDD series ) in the dining room. Tap selection is dependent on SWMBO happiness and season.
Tap one = DIPA for me ( soon to be replaced by an Oatmeal stout )
Tap two = SWMBO ( currently a 3% Belgian tapfelbier ) Porter on deck.
Tap three =Sugar Free Root Beer
Tap Four = Gin and Tonic.
