Default sparging extract grains

I have seen a few mentions of this, and wonder if it is worth it, if there is real gain. I have not done so on the past six extract brews, but today, brewing my first stout, I hung the grain bag from a cabinet knob and then ran three quarts of hot water thru it (see picture). I was amazed at how dark the liquid was coming off the bag, and made me wonder if we are missing much of the "good stuff" by not sparging our steeping grains.

Thoughts?

I never did that. I also didn't squeeze the grain bag or anything like that - on the theory that I didn't want any harsh tannins from the steeping grains.

The partial grain (mini-mash) kits I get at Austin Homebrew say to sparge.

I don't have any actual imperical data to back it up, but I agree, when sparging there is a lot sugars that come off the grain that would otherwise be discarded.

before I went AG, I did a lot of extract+grain and one partial mash brew. I always rinsed the grains with hot water.

I always sparge my grains, whether I'm doing a PM or extract with grains. It always works out well.
