Default LME Questions

In the beginners forum there is a sticky "this vs that" and it mentioned that there is a difference from in the canned LME.

1) Last LME I bought was Briess and came in a plastic container with a sealed lid. Is this any fresher than the canned stuff or is it the same as the canned stuff?

2) If I order some from an on-line source will it be fresher than the stuff in the LHBS?

3)Who has the best LME available?

I'm asking cause I want to know whether to support my LHBS or buy on line.
When all is said and done his prices (with the exception of hops) are pretty close to internet prices. But if I can get better quality supplies shipped to me I would rather do that.

Briess makes quality ingredients, no problems there. I'm unclear if that's what your LHBS sells - if it is, I think you're fine. As for freshness, i bet Briess has some kind of date code on their containers, but I don't know that for sure.

It was from the LHBS, had a foil lid and a screw on cap.

Some of the on-line retailers sell there LME in custom sizes, or it comes in a milk jug type container and such. I'm thinking they just buy in bulk from a company like Briess and bottle it themselves, cause that's what I would do.

So Briess is good any other quality companies I should look out for, as far as LME?

Side note: I must say the brew that I made with that LME is 1.5 weeks into bottles and is starting to taste quite nice.

regarding LME the two factors to consider are age and exposure to oxygen. If your LHBS has a reasonable amount of turnover the age should be short. From what you said the packaging seems appropriate to avoid oxygen.

I would support your LHBS. The only downside may be if you don't want the size they have. That is why recipes are always ripe for changes...

Yeah I bought the LME from my LHBS and seems like there is good turn over. I haven't had a completed brew yet with that LME, which was Briess Golden Light. It does suck if you need less than the size. I just used, refridgerated and used the rest 2 days later --- we'll see how it turns out. The Briess website said it could be refridgeratered after being opened.
