Two 5 gallon extract batches; Williams’s double stout and brown ale.
Beer went in primary Sunday 2 Dec and started perking Monday morning. I will be gone on a trip for a minimum of a week and could be gone 2 weeks. I thought it would be bad to leave the beer in the primary that long (11-19 days). Was thinking of moving it to the secondary this Thursday (4 days). What should I do? What is the down side of moving it to the secondary? Just asking the question because I’m new.

Hi Glenn, Ive had this question before and was told 11-19 days in the primary is nothing. Many people don't even use secondaries and just leave it in the primary for 3 weeks until they bottle. I hope this helps!

You could always take this opportunity to do a small experiment.

When you get back from your trip, rack and bottle...skip secondary. If your beer turns out the same or better, then you have just saved yourself some racking and cleaning.

I went from doing secondaries to extended primaries due to a vacation.
