Default Higher gravity reading

I brewed some oatmeal stout yesterday. This was a full 10 gallon boil that was pumped through a plate chiller and cooled down to 80* very fast. The first reading was suppose to be 1.050. well it came out at 1.072 ( I adjusted the temp for a 60* reading) I added 1# of malto dextrin this was not in the original recipe. would the malto dextrin make for a higher reading?

Was your OG calculated on boil volume? I.E. Your OG was 1.050 for a 10G boil, but you only ended up with 7.5 GAL for example.

The original recipe was for a 5 gallon batch. I doubled the ingredient to make a 10 gallon batch. I filled the kettle with 12.5 gallons and boiled down to 10 gallons.

Malto-dextrin wouldn't raise the gravity. I believe it is non-fermentable.

It will still raise the gravity, and also the finishing gravity will be higher than the original recipe.
