Default High Gravity Question

Brewers,

Yesterday I brewed an AHS Vanilla Porter. I added their 1% gravity boost to the wort. The kit instructions said the OG should be 1.052. However, when I removed some wort from the full fermentation bucket, my hydrometer read 1.090 ! I shook the bucket for about 1 minute to aerate, so I don't think it wasn't mixed. Anyone have an idea as to why the reading is so high?

Any input appreciated.

As long as you topped off to the correct volume (I am assuming 5 gal) it is almost impossible to be that far off of SG with extract brewing. The conversion of grain in all grain brewing is the variable that makes the SG more important.

Even after mixing there was probably a pocket of more concentrated wort. For example, I brewed the Deception Stout. Recipe says SG of 1.069 and I got ~1.080. It happens. RDWAHAB.

did you happen to top off with water after boiling? if so, 1 min shaking isn't generally sufficient enough to mix wort and water enough to get an accurate hydrometer reading
