Default Fruit flies near airlock??

This is only my second brew so im very new to this. My question is: is it normal to have fruit flies near the airlock? It was in the primary for a week, now its been in the secondary for about 12 days and i just recently saw about 2 or 3 fruit flies buzzin around the airlock. This is called an apricot ale, which uses and apricot extract added to the beer when its transfered to the secondary. Please let me know what you think, i just want to know if this happens, or if my beer is bad.

If there's flies buzzing around, they must smell something good

Did you spill any of the extract when you put it to secondary? If you spilled even a drop, it will scream "food" to a fly.

As long as you carboy is airlocked they shouldn't be able to get in, and your beer is as good as safe.

i've seen this in the past too - don't worry, they can't get in. the escaping co2 and associated odour is just teasing the little fcukers! Ha!

Agree with all above - Just don't let that airlock evaporate!

I know certain insects are attracted to co2 such as bees and mesquitoes if I remember correctly. It very well could also include fruit flies.

Good point, Ray. I know at least that mosquitoes are highly attracted to co2. No idea if this is true for flies.

It might also be that the apricot extract i added to the secondary is attracting them.

Reminds me of my all time favorite joke...

Two flies are sitting on a turd. One of them farts.

The other one looks at him and says "That's DISGUSTING!!! I'm trying to eat lunch!"

WHOOOOOOO!!!!!
