Default Excessive Trub, just curious

I've been brewing off/on for the past 6 years. Bottling has turned me off for a while but I bit the bullet and picked up some kegs and a keg setup. Guns Blazin now Have 3 batches brewed now, all Midwest Supply kits. A Hop head Double IPA, Imperial Stout (in the keg and hidden from my view so I forget about it so it conditions for a while ) and an Oatmeal Stout.

My question, The Oatmeal stout has an insane amount of Trub in it. I used smack packs in all kits. The Oatmeal has easily 4" of Trub in the bottom of a 6.5gallon carboy. It's been in the primary for nearly 3 weeks. The Imperial Stout with nearly 12lb's of LME had 1/2 that. The Oatmeal Stout had only 6lbs so I can't attribute extra sugar/fermentables to the mix.

Anyone have any ideas? Anything to be concerned about? This beer also caused the foam/krausen? to nearly come 2-3" from the top of the carboy. I've never had this one get this crazy before.

Sounds like you had extra proteins in that one. Not surprising, considering oatmeal's reputation, and the fact that oatmeal stouts are known for mouthfeel.

Sorry about the trub! It's most likely just extra proteins, IMO. No worries.

I wouldn't be concerned about it. I would often get a lot of trub in my fermentors too. And as for the foam/krausen, Justibone has the right idea. The extra proteins and other factors from the oatmeal will aid a large krausen. Hopefully, this will mean good head retention in your finished beer.

If you want to avoid trub, try "whirlpooling". It works wonders when trying to keep out the hop debris and trub.

Whenever I make batches with oatmeal, I end up with a lot more trub than usual. It freaked me out the first time, but after the second batch I figured it was normal.

Perfect, I figured it had to be something with the oatmeal. Can't wait to try this one. We've got a few good months of bone numbing cold up here yet!

Thanks Fellas!
