Default english bitter hops help

Hi all guys,

I am about to reach boiling in some 30 minutes. I am preparing palmers english bitter.

it has following specification:

25 IBu from bittering hops 60 min
8 IBU from EKG 30 min
5 IBU EKG 15 min.

My bittering hops have 6.5 alpha and boiling gravity should be somewhere arround 1.075 (at the end of boil)

I calculated usinf IBU calculator that i need 0.7 oz of bitering hops.

Could anybody please confirm this.

thanks

I'm assuming you mean the "Lord Crouchback's Special Bitter" recipe from How To Brew? The recipe listed here (http://www.howtobrew.com/section4/chapter19-3.html) indicates that to get 25 IBUs from the bitter hops you'd need 1 oz of 9% Alpha Acid hops. I'm not sure how you're getting .7oz of bittering hops. That's half the amount of alpha acids that Palmer calls for in his recipe! If you are doing a partial boil, you really need MORE bittering hops since you won't extract as much when boiling at a higher gravity. Probably more like 1.7oz if you're using 6.5% AA bittering hops. (I haven't run the IBU calculation, just pulling them out of my rear based on the relative AA percentage plus a little extra.).

What alpha acid percentage are your EKG? That matters, since you're boiling some of them for 30 minutes, and you'll get nearly as much bitterness from a 30 minute boil as from 60. Just out of curiosity what bittering hops are you using?

Ah, I forgot to mention that I was makinf this bear with 3.3 lb of extraxt, so everything is at the begining scaled with 1.8.
So I had some hallertau perle and some EKG, bot with 6.8 %. I used Perle for bitetring and EKG for aroma.
I had some problems with this batch cause my weight measuring tools isn't that good, so we will see what will the bitternes of the beer like.
If nothing, I will drink this batch myself

thanx and cheers
