Look & learn in the DIY section and surf Craigslist.

Score a free keg. Find an engineering friend to cut the top.

Get a 10 gal cooler and build a mash tun

Use gravity rather then pumps

You might also want to look into BIAB if you're looking to go cheap.

I've found that my extract brews are still my best so don't rush it. Getting the AG process down takes time. That being said, Craigslist is your best friend when it comes to coolers and turkey fryers.

I recently made a mash tun with a Coleman Xtreme 52 qt cooler (on sale at Cabela's, $40) and some hardware from Lowe's. Total cost maybe $90. One could go cheaper using plastic valve, tubing, and screening hose, while sealing cooler wall with a rubber stopper with hole. Worked great on my first all grain batch of Stone Pale Ale clone this past week.
