I used the big paint strainer bag, suspended in the BK, for a while with good results. But recently I did just what you said. I made a copper tube ring which is connected to the valve. I drilled 5/16" holes very close together in the bottom of the ring, and put an SS braid over it. It works very well, and I like it better than the paint strainer. To be fair I can't say why I like it better - probably just the aesthetics of all those hop flowers loose in the kettle. I do find it a bit more convenient for the chilling process (using an IC).
