Well, I "think" the Columbus does smell a bit cheesy - and the wife agreed. Though never used this type before - definitely not fruity - sort of a heavier aroma.

The Columbus I used as a finishing hop in my Armpit brew. The Cheddar low notes nicely complementing the floral bouquet of manliness. Ha!!

use them as your bittering hop.

I had the same problem with my homegrown hops a cheesey odour due to bad drying conditions.

I brewed a batch using the hops and found no discernible cheesy odour.

Cheers

Well, the cheesey odour (ha!) could be just the nature of Columbus hops - heavy and pungent. I was concerned about 50% of the cones being brown.
Thanks for tip regarding using them for bittering - good idea!
Cheers!
