Default Stale grains?

I do partial mash brewing. Three weeks ago I picked up a recipe (Irish stout) and have not had a chance to brew it. The cracked grains have been sitting in my closet and this morning I noticed they no longer have that yummy smell they had at first.

Do cracked grains go stale? Will the delay affect the taste of the beer?

Thanks!

Crush grain lasts like 2-3 days. In a fridge you can probably eek out a week or two tops. Grain is cheap, I would dispose of them.

Definitely get new grain. No sense in going through all that effort and getting a sh*tty beer over a few bucks worth of grain.

Chew a pinch. If they taste stale, toss them. Three weeks at room temps is pushing it.

[Could always make some Old Brittle Root Stale Pale Ale. Look on a Pogo website for the recipe. I know, I'm old.]

Thanks for the help! I'll head back to my LHBS rather than take a chance.
