Schwartzbeir Brew Day 2.0
|
|
Well, I am giving it another go today. I went by the LHBS today and picked up some more grains. I got a much later start(about 4:30pm) and had some propane issues.
I thought that I was going to be making an emergency trip to Walmart to switch out a cylinder, but I found one that was at least half full.
I fixed my immersion chiller, and tested it several times. The patch SEEMS to be holding. It's now in the kettle for the last 15 minutes of the boil. I'm going to pill it out and visually inspect it BEFORE I start pumping water through it. I'm also not planning on leaving the kettle while it is chilling. At the first sign of chiller failure, I'll pull it out and go to plan B. I'll update after the yeast is pitched.

It's in primary. Nothing to do now but wait.
I missed my efficiency by about 4%. I was getting about 70%, but I came in at about 66%. Looking back though, I think that my mash temp was a bit to high and my sparge temp was a bit to low. It happens, and I'm not that worried about it. My beer should still come in right around 5% ABV, and be very tasty.
I'll know more in a couple of months. I had a pretty good sized starter, so I should be seeing activity pretty soon. Then it's just a matter of stepping down the temp for a few weeks, then crashing it for a month or so.
In the meantime, my stout should be ready to go to secondary this weekend. I'll give it a couple of weeks and then force carb that and be drinking it by my party on the 23rd.

Nope, it held really well. I still don't trust it very much, so eventually I'll make a new one. But for now, this one will do.
