Ok, right now I'm testing my new Grizzly mill set-up. What do you guys think about this grist? Too thin? Too coarse?

You could probably go finer for better efficiency provided you have a good bed filter but it looks like a good crush to me.
 
def tighten up that grind, that is a bit to lose. you almost want it to the point that the hulls are just broken up (not mutilated) and separated form the internal grain
 
Grizzly mill? AKA a corona? I would definitely tighten it up. I have a corona and mine is WAYYYY finer than that. I condition, and my husks are usually in 2-4 pieces, but the endosperm is all broken up. Looks like you could go a bit tighter.
 
OK, now I may have over done it, good thing I got some rice hulls just in case I get a stuck sparge:

To my defence, I brought some milled grains from my LHBS for comparison, and this is what they looked like side-to side with my grains (this was the first attempt in milling):

Looks fine to me. My grains usually look something like that and I haven't had a stuck sparge before. If you're worried, then keep some on hand, but I wouldn't think that you would be using them.

How big of a batch are you making? Looks like a full 5 gallons of grain.
 
Your second pic looks good... Tighten til you feel a pucker, then tighten some more :D

You will have better luck if you condition your malt first...those husks will stay intact and help you filter w/o rice hulls. However, I would use the hulls fore this brew. Cheap insurance!!! I had a couple of (minor) stuck sparges, started conditioning, no problem :rockin:
 
2nd pic...the first looked uncrushed to my old eyes. The LHBS crush looks kinda weak IMO.

I'm with Wilser...have you brewed with the LHBS crush before? What was your efficiency? That looked as uncrushed as your first pic, and if so they are screwing folks with that crush. I can't imagine getting better than 50% with those grains :confused:

I have brewed with this LHBS crash for many years (they are a GREAT store with a FANTASTIC crew working there). My efficiency was ~65% for years, and then it jumped suddenly up to 75+ last year, for no reason at all (the same crush, same scales etc, and I was using the same brewing prosses). I just figured it must be because they got so much more business now, so the malt is probably fresher and therefore more efficient. I have never really cared that much about efficiency anyway, after all it's just a buck or two in extra grains, that's all.

You will have better luck if you condition your malt first...
