Need help, Brewing oatmeal stout right now
Hi guys, I'm brewing a partial mash oatmeal stout right now. I've just mashed my grains at 155 and I'm wondering if there is a typo in this recipe about the hops
http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator?group=16&item=6234 It says to use 4 oz of fuggles and 2 oz of Mt hood. Are stouts supposed to be that bitter? Sorry, this is a newbie question. |
sounds like too much at first glance. I would use 2 ozs for 60 min boil
|
It's a very concentrated boil, and those are low-alpha hops. By my calcs, the hop additions in the recipe will give you the 48 IBUs it says.
Use them all. EDIT: you can check here: http://www.tastybrew.com/calculators/bitterness.html |
Just as a side note since it is too late on this batch, the recipe calls for steeping flaked oats with no enzymes. This will lead to unconverted starches in your beer. Bacteria love unconverted starches. I wouldn't do this again without some base malt to provide enzymes, flaked oats need to be mashed not steeped. Hopefully this batch will be ok.
Cheers, EMB |
