Default Monster Mill Question

I have the three roller, standard size, model. When using it for the first time a few weeks ago I had problems with it not grabbing the grains from the hopper. I finally remedied this by opening up the lower gap (the upper is not adjustable) to the widest setting. In all honesty, I don't know where it started as my son knocked it over and I never marked the factor gap setting.

What I want to know is, is this a common malady or did I do more damage than I thought to it. I will be brewing again next weekend and using the 5.2 water treatment as well to try and make up for 60ish efficiency.

I still don't understand why the bottom gap setting affects the ability of the top gap to grab the grain, since the top gap doesn't change.
