Default Green Sand Coffee Stout

3 weeks ago I brewed what was to be a chocolate/coffee sweet stout. But the last time I did a sweet stout it was to sweet to me so I left out the lactose. So I guess that makes it just a chocolate/coffee stout. Fermenting was done OG of 071 and FG = 014. OG way outta range for the standard, but my effecincy was 5% higher that BeerSmith was set for.

I bottled today with 2/3 cup of 100% Ka`u Hawaiian coffee cold brewed in the 1.6 gallons of brew. Taste is pretty strong coffee, don't feel the chocolate at all. Maybe I need to up the coco next time.

3 lbs 5.8 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) US ------------------ Grain 1 85.2 %
5.6 oz Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM)----------------- Grain 2 8.9 %
1.9 oz Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) -------Grain 3 3.0 %
0.9 oz Black (Patent) Malt (500.0 SRM) -------------Grain 4 1.5 %
0.9 oz Roasted Barley (300.0 SRM) -----------------Grain 5 1.5 %
0.16 oz Galena [14.10 %] ------------ Boil 60.0 min 25.8 IBUs
0.30 oz Cocoa Powder (Unsweetened) -Boil 5.0 mins
0.08 oz Galena [14.10 %] -------------Boil 5.0 min 2.6 IBUs
1.0 pkg SafAle English Ale (DCL/Fermentis #S-04)
0.78 Cup Ka`u Cold Steeped Coffee ----Bottling 0.0 mins)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Est Original Gravity: 1.055 -------- Measured Original Gravity: 1.071
Est Final Gravity: 1.016 -----------Measured Final---Gravity: 1.014
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.2 %----Actual Alcohol by Vol: 7.5 %
Bitterness: 28.3 IBUs --------------Est Color: 34.5 SRM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got 16 bottles and a few oz left to sip. Can't wait until it's done conditioning. I bought some Ka`u 100% Hawaiian coffee some time ago and SWMBO didn't use any so I decided to try it out. Ka`u is the extreme southern end of the Big Island of Hawai`i and there is a Green Sand Beach at the very tip of the island. Hence the name.

Sounds yummy. IBUs a bit low but I'd still love to taste it.

Couldn't wait any longer especialy w/the sour beers I've been getting. This one is good right now but it's only been a week, but needs more time. The coffee is THERE, but hard to find the chocolate. Think I'll up the cocoa next time. Will do this again soon.
