Default Grain purchase saturday v What to get?

I'm headed to Morebeer saturday morning and was going to pickup a screen/false bottom for my kettle along with some grain.

I want to keep it kinda simple to start with as I don't know what I'm going to use as I settle into all grain brewing. I know I'll use the base malt as thats what its for.

This is just to get me started and I'll add to it as I find/create something that requires something different. I know that the crystal will last a long time as it doesn't take much for a batch.

I was thinking of getting:

- 50lb bag of Pale Malt
- 50lb bag of Crystal 15 (or) 40

Any suggestions or modifications to my purchase?

Is this a good place to start?

thanks
Jake

50 lbs of C 15 will last a looooooong time. Better to get a few different base grains by the sack and 5 - 10 lbs of crystals or other specialty grains.

yea, don't get 50lbs of 1 crystal. if you insist on getting specialties get a few recipes together and as suggested in another thread about this very thing today...get an order of hops going from Hopsdirect.com

or get the 50 lb of crystal and sell off the extra.

I got 2 row, and wheat malt in 55lbs, and then split bags of vienna, 15L and Rye Malt with a friend (thanks p4ck!). I fill in the blanks from there.

Wheat beer with vienna is great! also planning a vienna/cascade SMaSH and a Roggen.

I would get a #55 of Maris or Vienna instead of the Crystal 15

It all depends on how often you brew and what styles you like.

I brew about twice a month and I like non-wheat American and English style ales - Pale Ales through Stouts. My first AG bulk buy seems about right to me given how things are shaping up:

2 sacks of US 2-row
1 sack MO
20 lbs Vienna
10 lbs Crystal 40
5 lbs of other crystals, choco, victory
Several pounds of flaked barley (Besides stouts, I use 1/4 - 1/2 pound of this a lot for extra body/head. works better than carapils IMO)

The odd pound of more rarely used grains - Honey malt, etc.

The one item I could probably also buy in larger quantities is Munich. I'm loading a lot of that stuff into my amber ales.

I changed my shopping list to;

50 lbs 2row
50 lbs Pale Malt

5 lbs crystal 60
5 lbs crystal 15
10 lbs Wheat
2 lbs chocolate
10 lbs munich

I think that will last me for a while as I experiment. I'll pickup misc stuff at my LHBS if I need them.
