Default First run with BIAB Pot and New Jacket

I tried out my BIAB system. Did not have time to actually brew anything (Some game on TV I have to watch). I just ran water.

First, tried out the new burner. In a word, WOW. Did the test with 8 gallons of water. Started out at 80F. In the garage at 38F ambient, no wind. It brought the 8 gallons from 80F to 162F in exactly 20 min. 10gal aluminum pot BTW.

Then I tried out my new reflectix jacket. Put it on at 161 (pics below).

0min = 161F
15min = 160F
30min = 159F
45min = 158F
60 min = 156F
75min = 154F

All in all not too bad considering it was 38F out. I also think it will be much lower loss with 10lb of grain in there. Can't wait to brew with it next weekend.

That should out quite nicely, and unless you plan on goosing the tin with heat durning the mash, I'd bring that pot indoors once you hit your mash temp. Also, even with the jacket on, I'd still wrap the tun in some blankets for even more heat retention. Looks like a great setup.

Where did you get that reflectix material? Did you just get a roll and make your own?

Is that the bubble Pack insulation?

Second picture, down near the dial thermometer...looks like flame (I know it's not). Cool effect.

Got a roll at Menard's. It was the 24"x25' roll and I wrapped it 4 times. The lid is 3 layers. Seems to work really well. I expect the losses to be even less with grain (more mass) and if I warm up the garage (to say 60F instead of 38).

I hope to give it a real run this weekend
