First brew w/ pictures (My only Patrial Mash brew, then going AG)
Just posting for the fun of it. Pictures are fun to look at. Leave feedback if you want.
Liquid yeast and cooled 1040 OG wort for yeast starter
Oatmeal stout dough-in (money shot)
Keeping the heat in (sort of) for the 90 minute mash. Ended up heating the water back to mash temp twice during the rest.
Used a little more than 2oz to make up for acidity levels
Washing the grains after the rest
It's brew time
After adding hops
I ended up hooking up a blow-off tube instead.
A few notes: I got exactly 75% efficiency. The recipe was for 5 gallons and I ended up with 6 (barely any boil off due to stove top). I was trying to make 5 gallons of an Oatmeal Stout at 5.63% but I ended up making 6 gallons of Oatmeal Stout at 4.72%. The up side: 10 more bottles of beer, still fits in requirements for an Oatmeal Stout, and I got 75% efficiency doing a partial mash. The down side: less abv per beer. No big deal, more beer is always good, right? I got 75% efficiency by doing a 90 minute sparge rest and rinsed the grains for 10-15 minutes. My OG is 1.048.
I substituted the 2oz goldings for 2.15oz willamette. Hope it turns out fine. I did this because I plan on brewing the AG recipe to this in 2 weeks (to compare the difference between the two mostly and so I can just rack on to the yeast cake). Wanted to save the goldings for my AG version and since I have a butt-load of willamette, I figured it'd be worth a try. Thoughts?
