I just strain everything out as I dump into primary, hot side aeration be damned! Haven't had a problem yet.

I have considered 'hop balls' before with the tea strainers like you pictured, but have yet try it. I've just bought a HUGE one at an asian food market and am interested in what the results will be. It is about the size of a baseball, even a bit larger. I figure less trub material to work around when I try to rinse (wash) my yeast.
Great job on the first AG, looks like you did really well.

If im reading correctly you are talking about after it has been cooled going into your fermenter, right? If so that is not hot side aeration, and you want to induce as much oxygen into the cooled wort as you can.

I picked up the 3 gallon PET carboy at Rite Brew. I like the size. I'm brewing on the back deck and fermenting in the basement. Only a bit over 20 lb with 2.5 gallon of wort, so it's easy to carry down the steps. Plus, to aerate the wort, I just put in a solid #10 stopper and shake.

My LHBS owner doesn't care for them tho'. Says "made in China" plus he had return issues with them; delaminations and cracks. We'll see.

I was going with the 3 gallon Better Bottles, but they're too tall to fit in the dorm fridge that I'm planning to use for cold crashing. I'll be picking up a full size fridge from craigslist eventually, so if I have problems with these bottles, I'll just move on to BB's.

I thought about looking for larger ones, but when I have multiple hop additions, I might have trouble getting the IC down in the pot. I'm gonna' try just tossing the pellets straight in the boil next time. If I remember the Whirlfloc, then I should be able to whirlpool most of it into the center of the pot anyway.

Woke up this morning to find a very unhappy airlock:

Didn't have time to deal with it this morning before I left for work. When I got home, the mess was even bigger than the poorly focused photo above. I thought maybe that krausen surge was past, so I sprayed everything liberally with Starsan and put my spare airlock and stopper in. Checked back after dinner and the krausen was working its way into the replacement airlock. So, I sacrificed my 3/8" racking cane tube:

It's hard to see from the above shot, but the wort's color appears to be lightening up some and the aroma is wonderful.

The adventure continues! I'm loving this!
