Default first all grain day... thanks HBT

Well Im winding down my brew day, waiting for the last bits and pieces to finish drying and waiting to be put away. I figured this was a good time to sit down and thank everyone on this forum, as it has been my venerable go-to for all issues, both premeditated and emergent alike.

Here is my tale:
This being my 2nd batch, I knew that an All-grain recipe would be a bit of an undertaking.

I started out with O'Daniel's foreign extra stout recipe and, after a few adjustments based on the extensive help I received from deathbrewer and his stovetop all-grain method, I was able to put together a preliminary recipe. I spent the next week or two stumbling through beer tools pro (after running this recipe through both promash and beersmith) with the help of Bobby_M and his wonderful videos. From a blanket over my kettle mash tun, to a DIY wort chiller, brewday was riddled with information and knowledge I had picked up. Android's idea on using flyguy's T-siphon as an aeration venturi, coupled with my (first) yeast starter (thanks again deathbrewer)seems to have been successful, having produced fermentation bubbles within 3 hrs of pitch... and a nice frothy krauseny head a couple of hours later.

Although these were names that stand out, there were many more. Everyone who has posted here allowed me to work through the small steps of formulating a recipe, developing a plan, and putting my plan into action. I feel obliged to say thank you... I certainly couldnt have done it without the help of this forum and all those who have contributed to its breadth of information.

cheers
HIt

I wish I had went all grain after just one batch years ago. It took me about 3 years to go all grain. I just started over the summer and have already made 3 batches. The quality improvement over extract and partial mash is incredible.

good to know.. it really wasnt that much more work, but it was certainly a lot more fun --I had much more CONTROL (insert creepy laugh and hands wringing... no, seriously, Im actually doing it right now).

krausen has now fallen and the carboy tornado is over. I just switched it over to the airlock tonight.. its only been 48 hrs!!

wort was tasty.. cant wait to see how this dark beauty turns out.

this is getting pretty tasty. Its been carbing/bottle conditioning since halloween (primed with DME).

I cracked one a week ago and the head dropped out pretty quick...more waiting.

Tonight I cracked one after the obligatory 48 hrs in the fridge (thats hard on any batch.. especially your first AG)-- poured it into a tulip (i know, really?), big fluffy/creamy head..... and its still there (not 1.5 inches of it, but the top is still tan). sweeeeet.

One question:
when I first took a snort of it, I noticed the dreaded band-aid... once the head chilled out, smell gone. it tastes great, dry and roasty... no band-aid.

why would I smell band-aid (I checked for a band-aid on my hands... no dice). I dont use chlorine based cleaner and im pretty sure the Portland OR water isnt too chlorinated.

thoughts?

thanks again guys.. couldnt have taken this step without all the HBT'ers help. Now Ive got 2 AG brews under my belt.
