Default First AG recipe(s)

Okay so if you have been in the DIY area you might have seen my postings on my Brutus 9 1/2 build.

Coming down to the wire and preparing for a test brew then the inaugural AG run.

I have been looking around for some recipes and I found Scott R. Russell's book on North American Clone Brews.

Some of these beers, if they are a good representation of the originals, are GREAT beers.

Problem is all of these recipes are for 5 gallon batches. Once I try one in the five gallon batch size, how do I translate it to the 10 gallon batch. I know though my experience in the kitchen that not all recipes can be doubles with success.

Does that hold true for these and other 5 gallon recipes? Can they be doubled and not loose something?

I'm pretty sure you just double everything. That's what BeerSmith does when you scale the recipes.

Is it really that simple? So BeerSmith will scale recipes?

Is it a windows deal only?

Yea I love BeerSmith. You just click Scale for a recipe and enter the volume you want and that's it. I've used it on Linux through Wine just fine. No idea about Macs.

If you want software for the Mac, BeerTools Pro is the way to go. It scales recipes.

But you don't need software to scale recipes. They are just scaled proportional to the volume. If you have a 5gal recipe and you want to make 10gal, just double the ingredients. You do have to consider the efficiency of your system though. Remember, those recipes are calculated for a specific efficiency. You'll have to adjust based on your system. But since you've never used it, I would shoot for an efficiency of abou70%.
