On my second AG batch I ended up with only 60% efficiency but it was Saturday night so I wasn't able to get any DME until Monday. I just threw it in directly to the already fermenting wort and never had a problem.

Yeah I brewed Saturday all the way through And pitched the yeast that night. I don't think I actually added the DME until Tuesday. I dissolved the DME, cooled, aerated, and poured through the Krausen that had already formed. Hope this helps.

only thing with adding it later (not really a big deal) is that you'll have a little more volume to account for.

The other thing I'll point out is that you don't really need to cool it all that much, pouring a quart of hot liquid into 5 to 5.5G of cool wort isn't going to raise the temp of your beer enough to notice.
