Default Cooler Mashtun

I just recently purchased a 5 gal igloo round cooler for mashing and was wodering about how much grain can I fit succesfully into this ? I am still mini mashing and was looking to move up to all grain, but I don't know if this is going to cut it as a mashtun? Cheers

I think that you can only get 12-13 pounds in a 5 gallon round cooler. I would trade it in on a nice 48 quart rectangular one if you are going to batch sparge.

Or, you could get a 10g round cooler for a mash tun, and fly sparge using the 5g as a HLT. That's what I did.

I have successfully mashed 14 lbs in my 5 gallon cooler. It barely fit!

Most I've done was 12.5 lbs which resulted in an OG of 1.072. There was still a bit of spare capacity. I would guess 13.5 - 14 lbs would be the maximum.

Ditto. It works absolutely fine for reasonable gravity 5g batches, but won't cut it for high-gravity beers or 10g batches.
